Volunteer for Veterans Stand Down, Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011

July 18, 2011

The Orlando VA Medical Center and Homeless Services Network of Central Florida would like to invite you to participate in the 4th Annual Veterans’ Stand Down in Downtown Orlando on Saturday, September 24, 2011.

The VA and HSN are grateful for the continued support of the City of Orlando and Orange County Government for our event this year. In 2010, the Veterans’ Stand Down served 333 veterans in Downtown Orlando. In 2011, we expect to serve at least 350!

Services offered include showers, haircuts, clothing, meals, shelter and housing, employment resources, mental health and substance abuse services, Florida ID cards, legal services, food stamp assistance, medical care, and much more.

Date: Saturday, September 24, 2011

Time:  9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for client services

Location:  Downtown Orlando Recreation Center

649 W. Livingston St. Orlando, FL 32801

In order to make this event a success, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! If you would like to volunteer, please fill out the Volunteer Registration Form.

  1. Please verify that the link to the “Volunteer Registration Form” works. I just tried it and got an error.

    Thanks,
    Dave Carlton

  2. The link does appear to be working. There was probably a temporary problem. Try again later today or from a different computer.

  3. I previously volunteered to support the standdown but due to schedule changes I will regretfully not be able to attend.

    Kind Regards,

    Terry Hess

  4. The link is not working for me either! Can someone help me please?

  5. The online registration link is not broken. Because we reached capacity, we disabled the online volunteer registration link yesterday.

It’s kind of a good problem to have, but we try to avoid having too many volunteers for our events. If there’s more people than work available, volunteers end up standing around with nothing to do. That is not the kind of experience we want people to have at our events.

We do appreciate your willingness to help and we’re sorry we can’t accommodate you at this time. If you haven’t done so already, please sign up for our newsletter so that you hear about other opportunities that we will offer in the future.

  6. How come there was not any housing available IMMEDIATELY for the homeless veterans at the Stand Down? HOUSING IS WHAT THE HOMELESS VETERANS NEEDED!

  7. Good point, Cindy. We would have loved to have housing immediately available for the folks attending the Stand Down. Housing is what all of the homeless folks in our area need. Sadly, there really isn’t enough of it available. Food and clothing are in abundance out there, but housing is much more difficult to come by. As Homeless Services Network is preparing its next application for funding from the Department of Housing & Urban Development, we will have a strong focus on permanent housing as opposed to supportive services.
