Continuum News – January 2015

POINT IN TIME COUNT – January 29, 2015 – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Information on the Count and Volunteering, including registration and training can be found here.

Every year, Homeless Services Network of Central Florida (HSN), as the lead agency for the Central Florida Continuum of Care (FL-507), conducts a Point In Time count. The Point In Time count is conducted to provide a comprehensive count of how many persons are homeless in emergency shelter, in homeless transitional housing, and in places not meant for human habitation on any given night. The Point in Time Count provides the information needed to help us understand the nature and extent of homelessness in our Continuum of Care (Orange, Osceola & Seminole Counties) and the resources needed to prevent and end homelessness.

The count is scheduled for Thursday, January 29th, at 6:00 p.m. and will end on Friday, January 30, at 6:00 p.m.Some of the volunteer opportunities include:

  • Volunteers will be assigned to a 2 to 4 person team for a 3 hour shift (6:00-9:00 pm) to walk and/or drive around in designated neighborhoods administering the PIT “Street” Count survey to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. 
  • Conduct surveys at a homeless service centers
  • Conduct surveys at public locations and service centers

A training session is required.

Continuum-Wide SPDAT Training on November 19, 2014 – last day for reservations is November 12, 2014

The Homeless Services Network of Central Florida is hosting a training for the continuum of care membership and interested community providers on the Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool (SPDAT). 

This free training will be facilitated by Org Code the creators of this tool and will take place Wednesday November 19, 2014 from 9:00 am to 4:15 pm. The location will be sent to you after you register for the event.

If you would like to attend, please click on the link below and respond Yes no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 12, 2014. If you have already responded, you do not need to respond again.

FY 2014 HUD Continuum of Care Program Competition

The FY 2014 Continuum of Care (CoC) Program Competition opened on September 16 and closes October 30, 2014 at 7:59:59 PM Eastern Standard Time. There is no application as the scores from the FY2013 application are carried over to this application. Renewing projects are still required to be ranked. The Stand Down  is Saturday, September 27, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, at the Downtown Orlando Rec Center, 363 North Parramore Avenue, Orlando, FL 32801 (within walking distance of Lynx Terminal). Services available include: MEDICAL CARE; HAIRCUTS; VA BENEFITS; DENTAL SCREEN;
SHOWERS; FOOD; CLOTHING; SHELTER INFO; VOCATIONAL SERVICES; & MUCH MORE.

Point in Time Information for 2014

The HUD point in time count submission for the point in time count 1/31/2014, are now posted to the website. The link is here: Point in Time Info. We have also posted the Consultant report for the Point in Time Count and our submission to the State of Florida at the same link.

HUD and USICH: Core Principles of Housing First and Rapid Re-Housing Webinar

Join Ann Oliva, the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Special Needs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Richard Cho, the Senior Policy Director at the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) for this informative webinar on Housing First and Rapid Re-Housing. This webinar will take place on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. EDT. Participants will learn: Core Components of the Housing First approach; Core Components of Rapid Re-Housing as a housing model; How to implement Housing First and/or Rapid Re-Housing;Why both of these interventions are critical to the efforts to end homelessness. COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Amy Green, a reporter at WMFE, the NPR affiliate here in Orlando, is working on a special series of stories on homelessness in Central Florida, focusing on how foreclosures are affecting homelessness in the region. She  interested in interviewing a person or family who has gone through homelessness because of foreclosure. The person can be a homeowner who lost a home or a renter whose landlord lost a home, and the person was evicted. The person can be homeless currently or someone who was homeless in the past, like during the depth of the recession.  She can be reached at 407-273-2300 ext. 219.
