HSN will be surveying 15 labor pools in the tri-county area beginning at 5:00 a.m. and ending at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, January 28, 2011. The survey is part of HSN’s annual Point in Time Count, which is always conducted within the last 10 days of January.

Volunteers for our labor pool surveys will go to a labor pool site, arriving at approximately 5:00 a.m. when persons seeking work are lining up to seek work. Informal surveys are completed until 7:00 a.m. (or until all clients have been interviewed).

HSN is hosting an optional breakfast for volunteers at the Denny’s in Orlando at I-4 on Lee Road beginning at 8:00 a.m. to turn in survey forms, share their experiences and get lots of coffee and a hot breakfast.

HSN volunteers will be going to more than 70 locations to gather data on the unsheltered homeless through a simple two-page survey form. The aggregated data is reported to HUD and is used by local governments, foundations, businesses and nonprofits to develop programs that serve the needs of the homeless in our community. The data is especially important when applying for funding for homeless programs from local, state, and Federal sources.

Volunteers are asked to attend a 45-minute training session at HSN’s office at 2828 Edgewater Drive (downtown College Park) at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2011, where they will receive their assignments, get clipboards, surveys and directions to their assignments.

To sign up, please fill out the Volunteer Registration Form.

On December 4, 2009, Project Homeless Connect at the Downtown Orlando Recreation Center assisted 592 clients – despite pouring rain for most of the day. More than 270 volunteers happily took on the challenge and were instrumental in delivering life-changing services. Here’s just a snapshot of the number of services that clients received:

852 meals

592 individuals received grocery bags of nonperishable food and clothing

96 families received food stamps

262 individuals received birth certificate and/or IDs

121 persons received medical care

112 adults completed Workforce Central Florida job referrals and 30 adults were interviewed by employers for available jobs!

25 clients completed HIV testing and counseling

95 clients took hot showers and 42 clients got hair cuts from Paul Mitchell staff

168 clients received shelter referrals and 15 clients were moved into housing as of Monday, December 7, 2009.

I am writing to remind you of our Project Homeless Connect event this Friday, March 20, 2009 at Northland Church, 530 Dog Track Road, Longwood, FL 32750. It’s not too late to volunteer.

There is a training session tonight at 7pm in the building called ‘The Rink’ at Northland.

We still need volunteers, please come out to the training tonight or show up on Friday.

Please note that volunteers should check-in the Main Building on Friday before coming over to the ‘Rink’ for the event.

We hope to have the remaining 2009 dates scheduled in the next few weeks and I will send another email out when I have those dates. We currently have a Family Connect event scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Lyman High School. Here is a link to find out more about this opportunity: http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp456511.jsp

Thank you in advance for serving our neighbors in need.
